So who is Russ Tobin? He was born in Cheshire, a Scorpio November baby (we never explicitly find out his birthday, but given that Stan was born on November 10th - that's as good a guess as any!) and when we first join him - he is 22 and living in digs in Liverpool working for a builder's firm called Wainwrights. He is 6 feet tall, 12 stone 7 pounds, brown hair and blue eyes, slim and extraordinarily handsome by all accounts. Throughout the course of his adventures he will visit London - Portugal - London (again) - Majorca - London (again) - Nairobi (via Las Palmas, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London & Durban) & Mombasa - Nassau (via London & New York) - Miami(illegally) - Nassau - Miami (legally) - New York - Toronto - Las Vegas - Tahiti (via Los Angeles) - Sydney - Cheshire - Liverpool - Co. Kildare, Ireland (via Dublin) - London(again) and finally Los Angeles (and thanks to a wormhole in the space-time continuum - Brighton 25 years later! see below). Although 22 in the first book, he has already turned 26 by the start of Tobin in Paradise, and remains that age for the next 11 books (as they all take place between December and the following 8 months.)

The series of books seem to sit in 3 distinct sections. The "job" books where Tobin is employed and describing his experiences ("Sewing Machine Man" through to "Safari"). Then the "adventure" books where Russ is travelling the world and having footloose commitment-free crazy times ("Paradise" to "Down Under"). And then the "lost years" books where the White Marvel money is gone and Russ is drifting from job to job trying to keep afloat and wondering what to do with his life and where he is headed ("Here Comes" to "Goes Cuckoo")

When the trail initially ended in 1979, it hinted that further adventures lay ahead but Russ Tobin was quiet for 26 long years. Until, that is, 2005 when he returned in a new book! Buoyed by the interest from fans via this website, Stan was coaxed out of retirement and fittingly placed Russ running a Retirement Home in Brighton and it was as if he'd never been away! Literally - the action just seemed to pick up not far from where it left off, it just ignored the intervening years. Russ was still in his prime (and not in his 50s)

Although Stan did plan to write more Tobin novels, nothing was ever published. At one point in 2007 he did sign a deal to write a TV Series entitled "Make Way For Tobin" but that came to nothing in the end. I have copies of the scripts for the first 3 episodes, which I hope to make available at some point. They differ from the plot of the original novels in that Russ is introduced as unemployed, and in fact they follow the plot of the Randy Comfort novels more than anything. A visit to the job centre results in a job as the maintenance man in a block of luxury apartments called "Wisteria Court"...
