Stanley Morgan was a best-selling Author and Actor from Liverpool. Born in 1929, he sadly passed away in Cheshire at the grand old age of 88. He is missed by very many friends.
The Guardian printed an obituary for Stan, which you can read here
Alternatively enjoy a brief synopsis of his career.
In the 1960's he co-starred in a number of British films such as The L-Shaped Room and Konga. Stanley even had a pivotal role in the first Bond Movie - Dr No, where he introduces the man from the ministry to James Bond himself at the casino. Most of his acting credits were in second-feature crime shorts filmed at Merton Park Studios, where he was a regular on the scene.
Around this time he also featured in several TV commercials such as Camay Soap, Black and
Decker Tools and Esso Petrol. Then an advertising producer suggested he
make a 'voice-over' test tape for Whiskas cat food...and a whole new
career was launched. During the next ten years he did the voice-overs for some 500
commercials - Esso, Shell, British Army, Castella Cigars, Whiskas, Kodak
etc - and became one of the top voice-over artists of the era.
In the late 1960's and throughout the 1970's he turned his hand to writing and wrote a series of books detailing the adventures of a happy-go-lucky ladies man, by the name of RUSS TOBIN.
The book series was a runaway success and the first million sales of Tobin occurred in 1973. Stan told us that "Granada (Mayflower) presented me with a gold pen which I still have but have never used!"
It's no coincidence that around this time, due to Stan's success, a rival publisher signed up a novelist known as Timothy Lea, and began to print the "Confessions" books - which took the Tobin formula and dumbed it down to basic smut and giggles. (In defence of the Confessions series, they also sold a bucketload of books, and made a number of spin-off films as a result...)
Total sales of Tobin were around TEN MILLION - without the benefit
of critical review or any substantial advertising. He sold particularly
well in Australia, New Zealand, India and the Far East, and, to nobody's
surprise, was banned in 1970s South Africa.
Stan also gave us "The Fly Boys" trilogy - based around a dodgy Airline, and somewhere along the way found time to write a couple of serious adventure/spy books featuring Secret Agent Michael Morgan, a handful of other comedy books in the style of the Tobins and then later on in the 1980's and 90's some serious action thrillers for the US market which seemed to suffer from publishing disasters at every turn.
The Tobin novels and others were available at the time in Airport departure lounges and the like - easy-going hilarious reading for long, boring journeys. Back in the 90s and early 2000s they could be frequently located through charity shops, car-boot sales and house clearances. But as time moved on, they became harder and harder to locate and even Amazon Marketplace listings began to dry up.
As a result we are pleased to announce that all of Stan's books are now available as Kindle ebooks via Amazon, preserving them for all time. Click the Link below to browse the library of Stan's Amazon Author Page
